Follow all safety regulations for the individual as well as other employees, including keeping the work area clean and in orderly condition as well as wearing all appropriate safety attire for the job that is being performed. Weld components in flat or vertical positions. Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits. Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding. Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material. Examine workpieces for defects, and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment. Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
Work in an environment that is not environmentally controlled, including very hot conditions in the summer months and little heat in the winter. May also include being exposed to high place, using ladders or scaffolds, and working with hazardous equipment and under hazardous conditions on a daily basis. Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including earplugs, safety glasses and/or goggles, steel toe boots/shoes, weld helmet, welding gloves, work gloves, and a welding jacket or protective welding sleeves.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an accredited school is required. Accreditation should be from the US Department of Education.
American Welding Society certification is preferred but passing the company’s welding certification is required.
